BCCI Waits for Election Dates Before Releasing IPL 2026 Schedule

PublishedFebruary 16, 2026

Cricket fans across India are feeling anxious this month. The 19th season of the Indian Premier League is only two months away. Usually, the match dates are already public by this time. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India remains silent on the official fixtures.

The primary reason for this wait is the upcoming state elections. Several key states, such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, will vote soon. These states host many matches and famous teams. Organizing a cricket match requires thousands of security officers to manage the crowds. During elections, these same officers must guard polling stations instead. The government cannot easily provide enough security for both events at once.

There are also concerns about stadium availability. In cities like Kolkata, the local police might be too busy with election duties to clear the stadium for matches. Because of this, the board is waiting for the final election calendar. They do not want to announce dates and then cancel them later. This would ruin travel plans for fans and players.

We might see a partial schedule first. The board often releases the first two weeks of matches to get the tournament started. They then release the full list once the exact voting dates are known. While the delay is frustrating, it helps the league run without any sudden changes or safety issues.
