MS Dhoni Set to Return Against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026

PublishedApril 15, 2026

As MS Dhoni nears full fitness for a return in IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faces a difficult choice regarding their team balance.

After missing the first five matches due to a calf strain, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter is expected to take a final call tomorrow morning on whether he will travel for the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, April 18.

The Bowling Balance Challenge

Cricket experts, including Harsha Bhogle, have raised concerns about how Dhoni’s return will affect the team’s current balance. Since the Impact Player rule is already in use, adding Dhoni as a specialist wicketkeeper-batter at number seven could force the management to drop a regular bowler.

Bhogle noted that if Dhoni occupies a spot in the XI primarily as a finisher, CSK might find themselves a bowler short during critical phases of the game. He suggested that for Dhoni to fit into the side without weakening the bowling attack, he must take on a larger batting responsibility rather than just playing a few balls at the end of an innings.

Use of the Impact Player Rule

One potential solution being discussed by former players like Mitchell McClenaghan is using Dhoni as an Impact Sub. This would allow him to focus on aggressive batting without the physical strain of wicketkeeping or extensive running.

In recent matches, CSK has found success with a combination that includes power-hitter Dewald Brevis and spinner Akeal Hosein. The team has won its last two games against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, helping them move up from the bottom of the table.

Latest Injury Update

Dhoni has been practicing in the nets and recently participated in a long batting session. A final decision on his travel to Hyderabad for the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday, April 18, is expected by Thursday morning.

While fans are eager to see “Thala” back on the field, the coaching staff, led by Stephen Fleming, is carefully assessing if the team can afford to adjust its winning bowling combination to accommodate the legendary cricketer.
