Rajasthan Royals’ highest score in IPL is 242/6, scored against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad on 23 March 2025. Despite the mammoth total, RR lost the match by 44 runs while chasing SRH’s 286/6.
The Royals have crossed 200 on 24 occasions in the IPL. They were also the first team to chase down a 200-plus total in IPL history, achieving that in just their third-ever match back in 2008.

1. 242/6 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – 23 March 2025, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
RR’s highest score in IPL came in a losing cause. Chasing SRH’s colossal 286/6 in the opening weekend of IPL 2025, the Royals gave it everything and still fell 44 runs short.
Sanju Samson (66 off 37) and Dhruv Jurel (70 off 35) forged a 111-run fourth-wicket partnership in just 60 balls after RR lost three wickets inside the powerplay.
Shimron Hetmyer (42 off 23) and uncapped Shubham Dubey (34* off 11) launched late cameos, but the asking rate had climbed beyond reach. RR hit 18 sixes in total.
The match aggregate of 528 runs was the second-highest in IPL history at the time. Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 106 off 47 on SRH debut was the difference.
2. 226/6 vs Kings XI Punjab – 27 September 2020, Sharjah Cricket Stadium
This was the match that introduced the world to the Rahul Tewatia experience. And before Tewatia’s theatrics, this was Sanju Samson’s show.
Chasing 224, Samson smashed 85 off 42 balls with seven sixes and four fours. Steve Smith (50 off 27) kept the chase ticking, and then Tewatia took centre stage.
At one point, Tewatia was struggling at 8 off 19 balls. The Sharjah crowd had written him off. Then he smashed five sixes in one Sheldon Cottrell over and finished with 53 off 31.
RR chased down 224 with three balls to spare for a 4-wicket victory. It was the highest successful run chase in IPL history at the time and stayed that way until PBKS chased 262 in 2024.
3. 224/8 vs Kolkata Knight Riders – 16 April 2024, Eden Gardens, Kolkata
A match of two centuries. Sunil Narine struck a maiden T20 hundred (109 off 56) to power KKR to 223/6. In reply, RR were 121/6 in the 13th over. Game over, right?
Not when Jos Buttler is at the crease. He stayed alive when everything collapsed around him, finding his range in the death overs.
Rovman Powell (26 off 13) provided the crucial cameo. Buttler then clobbered two sixes and a four in the 19th over to get the equation down to 9 off 6.
He finished unbeaten on 107 off 60 balls, completing the chase off the last ball of the match. RR won by 2 wickets, equalling the record for the highest successful chase in IPL history.
4. 223/5 vs Chennai Super Kings – 3 April 2010, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
Before the Impact Player era made 220 feel routine, this innings was a genuine outlier. It held the record as RR’s highest IPL total for a full decade from 2010 to 2020.
Naman Ojha top-scored with a brilliant 94 off 55 balls, hitting eight fours and six sixes. Shane Watson blazed 60 off 25 at the top, with five fours and five sixes.
But even 223 was not enough. CSK had posted 246/5 batting first, and RR fell 23 runs short in the chase. The match produced 469 runs, a remarkable total for 2010-era IPL.
5. 222/2 vs Delhi Capitals – 22 April 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Jos Buttler was in the form of his life during IPL 2022, and this innings was the peak of that purple patch.
He smashed 116 off 65 balls with nine fours and nine sixes. Devdutt Padikkal (54 off 35) provided excellent support, and the two put on 155 for the opening wicket.
Captain Sanju Samson then provided the perfect finish with an unbeaten 46 off 19, laced with five fours and three sixes. RR posted 222/2 and won by 15 runs.
Buttler went on to score 863 runs in IPL 2022, the second-most in a single season behind Virat Kohli’s 973 in 2016. This DC demolition was the centrepiece.
6. 220/3 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – 2 May 2021, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
Jos Buttler’s maiden T20 century arrived on a Sunday afternoon in Delhi, and it was worth the wait.
He blasted 124 off 64 balls, at the time the highest individual score by an RR batter in IPL history. Sanju Samson (48 off 33) played the perfect supporting role, and the pair put on 150 for the second wicket.
RR posted 220/3 and bowled SRH out for 165/8. Chris Morris (3/29) and Mustafizur Rahman (3/20) did the damage with the ball. The 55-run victory was RR’s most dominant win of the 2021 season.
7. 217/7 vs Deccan Chargers – 24 April 2008, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
This is where it all started. Just the third match in Rajasthan Royals’ IPL history, and they became the first team ever to chase down a 200-plus total in the IPL.
Graeme Smith (71 off 45) and Yusuf Pathan (61 off 28) led the charge. Mohammad Kaif (34 off 16) kept the momentum going through the middle overs.
And then came the captain. Shane Warne walked in with the chase still in the balance and smashed an unbeaten 22 off 9 balls to take RR over the line with one ball to spare.
RR won by 3 wickets in a match that set the template for Shane Warne’s fearless brand of cricket. That 2008 squad went on to win the inaugural IPL title.
8. 217/7 vs Punjab Kings – 12 April 2021, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
This was Sanju Samson’s coronation as RR captain, and what a way to start. He played one of the greatest innings in IPL history. But it ended in heartbreak.
Chasing PBKS’ 221/6, Samson smashed 119 off 63 balls with 12 fours and seven sixes. He carried the chase single-handedly, reaching his century in the 17th over.
Needing 5 off the last ball, Samson swung for a six but couldn’t connect cleanly enough. RR finished on 217/7, falling 4 runs short. Samson walked off shaking his head, knowing his 119 had been in vain.
It remains one of the most bittersweet innings in IPL history. A century that would win most games, yet it was not quite enough.
9. 217/4 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore – 15 April 2018, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
Sanju Samson walked into Bengaluru and dismantled one of the strongest bowling attacks in the IPL with sheer six-hitting power.
He remained unbeaten on 92 off 45 balls, clearing the ropes 10 times. Just two of his scoring shots were conventional fours. Everything else was aerially dispatched.
Ajinkya Rahane (36 off 20) provided the early momentum, and Jos Buttler anchored the middle overs. Shreyas Gopal then starred with the ball, taking 2/22 as RCB were restricted to 198/6.
RR won by 19 runs. Samson was named Player of the Match, his six-hitting masterclass at the Chinnaswamy a performance that announced him as one of the IPL’s most destructive batters.
10. 217/5 vs Kolkata Knight Riders – 18 April 2022, Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai
Another Jos Buttler century. Another breathless finish. And a Yuzvendra Chahal moment that became IPL folklore.
Buttler scored 103 off 61 balls to power RR to 217/5. Sanju Samson (38 off 19) and Shimron Hetmyer (18 off the final over off Andre Russell) provided the late boost.
KKR looked comfortable at 178/4 after 16 overs with Shreyas Iyer (85) and Aaron Finch (58) in full flow. Then Chahal happened.
He took four wickets in one over, including a hat-trick (Iyer, Mavi, Cummins off successive balls) to finish with 5/40. KKR collapsed from 178/4 to 210 all out. RR won by 7 runs.

Jos Buttler features in a staggering six of the top ten entries (matches 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10). Four of those included centuries. No other batter has shaped a franchise’s highest totals list so comprehensively.
